Vintage Thursday Thingies - 1976 NZ Womans Weekly

Sorry this week's thingies aren't exactly vintage but I'm hoping these ads from my copy of 1976 NZ Woman's Weekly are ok - check out some of these:

Remember when shelves like these were the in thing?

Gosh I remember the Wombles too - they were all the rage at one point. I'm sure that as a child I would loved knitted toys like this.

Oh my goodness - when I was growing up my mother always made a bowl of Bean Salad to take to barbeques we were invited to. I use to hate the taste but now I sort of like the bitter tang.

My father bought us a tent like this in the late 70's early 80's. I imagine they were quite expensive back then and from what I remember he diligently saved up for it.

Even now I still occasionally see the remnants of floor tiles like the ones above in houses that haven't been modernized yet. I'm sure these were all the rage like avocado benches and baths etc.

Check out this lady's groovy crochet homemade cardigan - my grandparents had the same coloured couch too as what she's sitting on. It's almost a burnt orange - very 70's!

Listening to: Rockmelons feat Deni Hines - It's not over.

Hope you enjoyed that - for more thursday thingies visit the Colorado Lady's blog.

I love all of the old ads! I've got a few magazines from the 50s, and I like to pull them out once in a while and look at the ads. That bean salad looks yummy, and it might be unfashionable, but I think I would wear that sweater!

Great ads, they really chronicle the history of what was "hot" in the day! Thanks for sharing!

These are vintage, Amy, they're more than 30 years old! I think I might like that crocheted wrap sweater to wear today. It could be my "teacher sweater" to keep in my classroom.

Haha, those pictures are great! I was a teenager in the 70s but I don't remember that Womble. It looks kinda scary! Oh and the tent!
They were made of that heavy smelly canvas. I remember many vacations camping with a tent like that.
Thanks!
Cathy

What great ads! And what a reminder of days gone by! I love the retro look to the floor, I am sure there are a lot of people who would pay good money to have that floor today!!

Have a great VTT and a wonderful weekend.

Avocado green and burnt orange--been there and done that! And I had robin egg blue shag carpet to go with it. I love to go through old magazines and look at the ads.

Oh gosh, I love the shirt the woman is wearing in the first ad...I had several with those long pointy collars :) and my Mom redid her kitchen floor with that new flooring-it was supposed to look like white brick and was quite expensive! She loved that floor!

Thanks for the memories!

Fun to read your ads - very entertaining, and good for some chuckles, as things sure change, don't they?

What a fun post! Is the fact that the animal took 50 hours to crochet a good thing or a bad thing?? And that woman in the first picture - are her pants vinyl?

My Mum made knitted "Gollies" for my boys, stuffed them with old nylons. I still have one that needs a little repair I should fix him up & post him for VTT!

I remember my mom's friend wearing a scarf like that. I thought she was so glamorous.

I had that tent, and I wore scarves like that. I loved it on days when my little ones kept me too busy to even shower and do my hair. Now if a person wears a scarf on theor head, either people think they are Muslim or have cancer. However, we know that all styles come around again about 40 years later with small changes. For example in N. America the poofy 50s-60s skirts are back, but they are above the knee, not below, and usually on a dress with no shoulders, or at the most, spaghetti straps or halter neckline. My mom is a fashionista and we have a fashion encyclopedia and it's almost regularly, every 40years, as if that's the "fashion recycle" rule or something. I have also seen tons of 60s clothes out right now too though, as well as 60s colors, hairstyles, patterns in fabric and decorating, and the white paint cupboards/cabinets that were being torn out of houses just last year on all the decorating shows are now acceptable, and people are tired of the dark wood cabinets and are painting them high gloss white. It seems like so many people I talk to say they are more prone to depression from the dark kitchen, and want to lighten the room up. It seems NZ was so very much in style like the rest of the world, which kind of surprises me. I didn't think a smaller place would be so Euro-fashion modern. Even in Canada we dress so much more conservatively than the US that we had a separate Sears Catalog with different style of clothes in it than the US had.I am so hooked on your blog Amy! I sure hope to make my retro blog even half as cool as yours!
Blessings,
Sheila
